Parent literacy workshops as an intervention to improve literacy in second grade students

Parent involvement and participation in their child’s education is a key factor in determining academic success. The basis of this thesis project was to examine if providing literacy workshops for parents would be a beneficial strategy to increase the academic achievement of second grade students. The research shared in this project reflects support for parental involvement. The research also provides information on best practices to follow when teaching reading. The workshops this project was focused on covered topics ranging from specific literacy skills to general guidelines for helping children with homework and a workshop centered on using the public library. Attendance at these workshops would be of benefit to parents, students, and educators. The parent literacy workshops would improve student success in school while improving communication and the relationship between students and parents, students and teachers, and parents and teachers.
